How can I avoid loneliness this time of year?
Q: I have experienced a lot of loss in my life. How can I avoid the loneliness this time of year brings?
A: I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of loved ones in your life. The holidays can be a very challenging time especially when we are missing someone. It seems this time of year is more often centered around family, friends, and good times. Although those things are important, the real reason to get together is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the fact that He has chosen to live inside the lives of His children who have received Him as their Lord and Savior.
It’s easy to focus on feelings of loneliness or discouragement over times we have shared in the past with loved ones who are now gone. We can instead celebrate, if they were in Christ Jesus, we will be reunited with them again in heaven. We can rejoice because of the Good News: God so loves us, He gave us Jesus!
In times like these, I love to turn to scripture. Joshua 1:9 states, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Try proclaiming that out loud. Then, look for opportunities to be around other believers during the Christmas season. Say, “Yes!” to invites at friends’ houses and church activities.
